The Grammy-winning singer and songwriter John Legend, 34, has a new album, “Love in the Future,” scheduled for release on Tuesday. He lives with his fiancée, Christine Teigen, a model, in New York and Los Angeles.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21
I wake up early for a musician, like 7:30 or 8 a.m., though probably not early for most people. I got up and dressed for a couple interviews in a white crew-neck tee, black Maison Martin Margiela jeans and black high-top sneakers with white soles from Lanvin. I also had a black and white baseball jacket by Saint Laurent with me. I love this jacket. I bought it at Jeffrey and it was my first time wearing it.
At night, I had a live performance at the Red Rooster in Harlem. I picked my outfit from some options sent to me by my stylist Dave Thomas. I can be casual every day, especially during the summer, but when I’m onstage, I try harder. Putting in that effort helps me feel more confident. I chose a black denim jacket by Givenchy, a black T-shirt with fuzzy dots by Comme des Garçons and black pants by Juun.J.
THURSDAY, AUG. 22
I tend to wear a lot of black when I’m in New York. It’s the color of the city. Actually, as I’ve gotten older, my clothes have gotten simpler, cleaner. Today, I wore dark Unconditional jeans with zips and Giuseppe Zanotti black sneakers, also with zips. On top I wore a black Dolce & Gabbana henley and another Saint Laurent jacket, this one in black leather.
At night, I went to a party on the roof of the Soho House. I switched out of the henley and put on a black Prada cashmere pullover. Mumford & Sons were performing, and they just kept playing and playing, which was very cool. By the end of the night, they were playing a bunch of cover songs and having people come up and sing. When they started with “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” my friends were like “John, you’ve got to go.” So I did.
FRIDAY, AUG. 23
Out to the Hamptons for my bachelor’s weekend. I’m getting married very soon, and it was seven friends of mine in a house. I actually still need to get my final fitting for my wedding suit. It’s charcoal gray and it’s by Gucci. For the ride out, I wore distressed bluejeans by G-Star Raw and a blue T-shirt from Barney’s Co-op.
SATURDAY, AUG. 24
Day 2 in the Hamptons: I hung out by the pool most of the day — my Paul Smith swimming trunks were navy, orange and white — and barbecued chicken and steak. Chrissy and I barbecue a lot at our house in L.A. To dress for dinner and to go out afterwards, I wore the Prada black cashmere pullover (I bought two of these), black Margiela jeans and the black Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers. We stayed out until 2:30, which is late for me. I definitely don’t go out like I used to.
SUNDAY, AUG. 25
A lazy day. We left around noon to drive back to the city. I wore a red John Varvatos T-shirt, navy Marc Jacobs shorts and white low-top sneakers. I also had on my silver Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch. I’ve done events with Audemars and they’ve gifted me a few watches. It’s funny, because I’ve actually never bought myself a nice watch before. I’m not really into jewelry in general. Never have been.
MONDAY, AUG. 26
I literally didn’t leave my apartment building. My “Home Alone” uniform is a Tom Ford robe. It’s gray with black trim and tassels.
TUESDAY, AUG. 27
Had an event at the Box, which was an album preview party. More black. Lots of black. I wore a black crew-neck T-shirt by Jil Sander and black slacks by Lanvin with zips on the bottom. My sneakers were by Android in black suede and leather. And I went with a black leather jacket with gold zips by Juun.J. I wear a lot of leather onstage.
